Watch it for...

Its candid, humorous, and sex-positive portrayal of a middle-aged woman seeking out the pleasure she’s waited much too long to experience!

Synopsis

After decades in an unfulfilling marriage, a widow named Nancy, played by Emma Thompson, has a series of meetings with a much younger sex worker. The film explores the fraught relationship many women have with sex, body image, and the pursuit of their own happiness. It balances these heavy topics with humor and a handful of surprises. The chemistry between Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, playing Nancy’s escort Leo Grande, is undeniable, and the film progresses at a seamless pace despite the limited setting. Though its main character is a retiree, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande has all the makings of a coming-of-age film. It’s a beautiful ode to those still finding themselves and learning what they want later in life.

Rose's thoughts

I grew up in an environment where sex was stigmatized. My high school practiced abstinence-only sex education, and my parents never had conversations with me about sex. I really related to the way Emma Thompson’s character struggled to take ownership of her sexuality. In the film, it’s just one facet of all the ways she’s ignored her own needs and desires to please everyone else, a habit I’m still trying to break. The acting performances are incredible, and by the end of the movie, you’ll feel connected to the characters and really care for them. The overall message of the movie was inspiring—it’s definitely a funny and meaningful watch!
