Watch it for...

A mind-blowing (and opening!) look into the way psychedelics influence our brain, and how they could revolutionize mental health treatment.

Synopsis

Based on the book of the same name by Michael Pollan, How To Change Your Mind is a revolutionary docuseries that explores how psychedelic drugs can unlock hidden potential in our brains. The show consists of four episodes, each one focusing on the history and therapeutic potential of a particular drug (LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, and mescaline). Accompanied by serene visuals and music, host Michael Pollan takes a trip (no pun intended) into the world of psychedelics by interviewing psychiatrists and scientists and highlighting the various stories of patients whose lives have changed since undergoing psychedelic therapy. Even if you’re entirely against drug use, I highly suggest going into this series with an open mind.

Isobel's thoughts

I’ve always been a little afraid of psychedelics. I’ve never taken them because I’ve heard scary stories about bad trips, and about the people who do crazy, irresponsible things while they’re under the influence of hallucinogens. That’s just not me! So I was surprised to learn how untrue a lot of these stereotypes were, and how the stigma surrounding these drugs might even be slowing down important research! As someone who has dealt with mental health issues, this show made me feel hopeful about the future of psychiatric care.

Seeing the success stories from the people who’d previously been affected by trauma, depression, and anxiety was incredibly uplifting and powerful. This series creates such a warm and inviting atmosphere that is almost feels like it’s giving you a comforting hug, and I finished the show feeling inspired. As the world grapples with a mental health crisis (made worse by the pandemic), I believe a show like this is incredibly important in spreading awareness and hope.
