Watch it for...

The hilariously awkward and very human interactions between the main characters, a storytelling perspective that centers the female gaze, and LGTBQ+ plotlines!

Synopsis

Based on Chris Kraus’ cult classic feminist novel of the same name, I Love Dick follows Chris (Kathryn Hahn), a struggling filmmaker, who follows her husband, Sylvère (Griffin Dunne), to Marfa, Texas, where they land in an eccentric academic community. Chris and her husband both become deeply infatuated with Sylvère’s research fellowship sponsor and lauded professor, Dick (Kevin Bacon), and vie—with varying degrees of success—for his attention.  While in Marfa, the couple meets a variety of funny and eccentric characters in the stark beauty of the Texan desert. The series, told with a unique shifting point-of-view style from Chris to Sylvère, ultimately lays bare their troubled marriage and how, through her obsession with Dick, Chris finds herself as an artist.

Annaliese's thoughts

This show was like nothing I had ever seen before! It does such a good job of portraying the human experience, through both Chris and Sylvère, in a way that is both comical and very real. It was also refreshing to watch a show that is created by women—I Love Dick has fully-fledged female characters and flips the male gaze on its head by having Dick be the object of the women’s lust and infatuation. I also liked that this show didn’t shy away from ‘adult’ topics, as Chris and Sylvère discover their marital issues and Chris faces her unfulfilled artistic dreams. It was definitely a wild ride, but I really loved this show!
