A picture of how difficult it can be to build a better life without a strong support system for a young single mother, based on a true story!

Synopsis

Based on the memoir of the same name by Stephanie Land, Maid is a limited series that demonstrates the struggles of a young single mother, Alex, as she tries to give her daughter, Maddy, everything she deserves: a good education, basic healthcare, and a healthy home life. But it’s harder than it seems like it should be. With multiple jobs, struggling to leave a domestic abuse situation, and getting support from the state, Alex hits dead-end after dead-end. Maid takes viewers through a rollercoaster of emotions and empathy as problems seem unending for Maddy and her hardworking mother. However, it’s not all bad news in this series. Alex’s love for her daughter is her strength, and it is enough to push through these obstacles and create a better life for herself and her daughter.

Peace's thoughts

I have always thought that escaping violence is as easy as looking for the next peaceful place. However, watching the decisions Alex had to make to keep herself and her daughter safe from her abusive and manipulative boyfriend, Sean, has made me realize that the most obvious solution may not be the easiest decision to make for a struggling mother of a toddler. I felt so much empathy for Alex, and my eyes were really opened to the realities of a different kind of life through Maid.

This series was a great watch, even though it touches on heavier topics. It’s written with so much emotion that you can’t help but get sucked into Alex and Maddy’s struggles. It also provides excellent insight into the pitfalls of the system for single mothers like Alex, and it raised some really interesting questions for me. All in all, I loved this show and would definitely recommend it!
