The tension between likeably unlikeable women reconnecting to unravel a mystery surrounding a plane crash they survived…and a heavy dose of 90s nostalgia!

Synopsis

Yellowjackets is an action-packed thriller that centers on four women who survived a horrific plane crash and months of isolation in the Canadian wilderness when they were in high school, alongside the rest of their soccer team. The timeline bounces from present day, where the women are in their 40s, back to the 1990s, when the crash took place. Viewers watch as the show explores the lives and outcomes of each of the girls that survived the crash. The crash and subsequent survival has shaped all of the members of The Yellowjackets soccer team in different ways, and the extreme consequences of their survival brings everyone’s true nature to light. Their shared secrets transcend the decades and on the 25th anniversary of the plane crash, The Yellowjackets team members, now in their 40s, must band together again to find out who is trying to reveal the unspeakable acts they committed to survive the plane crash.

Wendy's thoughts

Between the stellar cast, the 90s flashbacks, and the thriller premise, I was immediately sucked into this series. Fellow 90s teens like me will enjoy seeing Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis on the screen, as well as my queen Melanie Lynskey and the incomparable Tawny Cypress, taking the leads. The teenage girls reminded me of myself and my friends in the 90s, and those feelings and memories were fun to revisit on screen. The amazing alt-rock soundtrack also helped to drive the nostalgia of this show!

I enjoyed seeing women in their 40s as the main characters, something we don’t get enough of on TV. I saw a little bit of myself in all of the characters, and even though they’re making some horrible choices, I could relate to many of their struggles. I also loved that there was a great deal of diversity in characters represented in the show, and that while the women as mothers and partners was a part of their lives, it wasn’t the main focus of Yellowjackets. All-in-all, this was one of the best new series I’ve seen in years and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait for season two!
